IBV: Virtual Boundaries w7 "Remote Warfare" Flashcards
Geocentric concept of war
- classic notion of war: about territory and population
- classic notion of armed conflict: (laws of armed conflict) it should be restricted to a geographical battle zone
Remote warfare
artificial intelligence used in war > light-footprint military interventions involving a combination of drone strikes and airstrikes, special forces and M2M
War as mobile (place)
Redefining the notion of armed conflict as a mobile place attached to the person of the enemy
Outcome > justifying the right to execute suspects anywhere in the world
e.g.’Hunting warfare’ (chamayou in Drone Theory)
Everywhere War
the emergent war; the event-fun quality military, paramilitary and terrorist violence can, in principle, occur anywhere
Outcome > difficult to define when we are at war or not (and to define the battlefield)
Target-centred concept of war (2)
precise war - targeting
(1) principle of precision or specification “his body becomes the battlefield” (chamayou)
(2) principle of globalization or homogenization “the whole world becomes a hunting ground”
Securocratic war
State frames the war as necessary for protection of civilians (of the threat / enemy), there is however no imminent threat to civilians.
Enclosure
Taking and demarcating land once used as a common resource.
1) legal instrument for appropriating land
2) and material for reinforcing boundaries
Necro-ethics / killing with care
Killing with care - accuracy
Drones are ‘humanitarian’ because they save lives - and specifically ‘our’ lives. Nobody dies, except the enemy.
