IBV: Virtual Boundaries w6 "Digital Bordering" Flashcards
virtual boundary
a category of distinction and social sorting (including targeting) established through remote technologies of identification
social sorting
the classification of populations as a precursor (forerunner) to differential treatment by e.g. exclusion
- exclusion means separating the ‘ins’ from the ‘outs’, the ‘deserving’ from the ‘undeserving’.
- registration and documentation are prime tools to do this
surveillance / function creep
the mere existence of the data stored in these systems will tempt politicians and bureaucrats to use them for goals other than for which they have been constructed
Panoptican
the Panopticon Europe is not a ‘factory of correction’ its aim is not discipling and correcting undesirable migrants
- > it is designed as factory of exclusion and of people habituated to their status of the excluded
Surveillance
current surveillance (observation) technologies more subtle and sophisticated than ever before and rely on selective rather than generalized forms of control
exclusion of targeted groups in ways that are scarcely visible to the public
Counter-surveillance
by NGO campaigns
- violation of and interference with people’s privacy and bodily integrity
- violation of human right to leave a country and ask for asylum
governance
attempt to direct and intervene in social processes to produce desired outcomes and avert undesired ones
biometric border
biometric data refers to any computer data created during a biometric process - including samples, models, fingerprints, similarity scores and all certification or identification data excluding the individual’s name and demographics
