Nation
Large politicized ethnic groups associated with specific territories over which they seek a degree of autonomy.
Conflict
Any situation in which two or more parties perceive they have mutually incompatible goals.
State
Relatively centralized autonomous organization successfully claiming monopoly in the use of forse within a large and clearly bounded territory.
Identity
Answer to the question ‘who are you’, people have multiple identities that are contextual, flued and (inter)changeable
Social identity
Answer to the question ‘who am I’ based on membership in a social group or category
Ethnicity
Ethnic group is a communal group larger than social formations such as family, clan, age, gender or neighborhoods. Ethnicity is related to a sense of belonging based on the belief in shared culture and common ancestry.
Nationalism
Primarily a political principle which holds that political and national units should be congruent.
Civic nationalism = outsiders can assimilate
Ethnic nationalism = outsiders can never become part of the nation
