IBS CONDITION
A
Common chronic, relapsing and often life long - associated with abdominal pain,diarrhoea or constipation, urgency, incomplete defaecation and passing mucus

Who is its most common in, what is it exacerbated by?? In terms of food
A
Exacerbated by:
- Coffee, alcohol and milk
- Large meals
- Fried food
- Stress
More common in women 20-30 y/o

Non Drug treatment -
A
- Increase excessive
- At regular meals
- Reduce fresh fruit consumption to 3 portions per day
- Reduce insolvable fibre
- Reduce caffeine,alcohol and fizzy drinks
- Avoid sorbitol if you have diarrhoea
- Reduce stress

Drug treatment:
What do we avoid hyoscine butylbromide innnn???
A
- Normally treatable over the counter the counter
- Antispasmodics:alervine,mebverine and peppermint oil- Laxatives - if constipated(not lactulose as it may cause bloating)
- Loperamide - if experiencing diarrhoea
- Antimuscarinic - hyoscine butylbromide (avoid in cardiac disease)

Second line if OTC doesn’t work:
A
- Low dose tricyclic antidepressant - amitriptyline
- SSRI if TCA doesn’t work
Use in unlicensed
- SSRI if TCA doesn’t work
