IBA Flashcards
What is one tool for quantifying the risk of drug abuse?
SDS: Severity of Dependence Scale for drugs.
AUDIT or AUDIT-C (Shorter) for alcohol use.
Gives the patient an objective idea of what the risk of their drug use is to them.
Not preaching, not an opinion, is a ‘fact’.
What is ‘FRAMES’?
Who developed it?
Brief interventions - Hester and Miller.
Several studies have indicated that brief interventions for risky drinking and alcohol abuse are efficacious and feasible.
Feedback Responsibility Advice Menu of options Empathy Self-efficacy
What does the FRAMES model encompass?
Feedback: Give feedback on the risks and negative consequences of substance use.
Responsibility: Emphasize that the individual is responsible for making his or her own decision about his/her drug use.
Advice: Give straightforward advice on modifying drug use.
Menu of options: Give options - foster the clients involvement in their decision-making.
Empathy: Be empathic, respectgul, and non-judgemental.
Self-efficacy:
Express optimism that the individual can modify his or her substance use if they choose. Self-efficacy is one’s ability to produce a desired result or effect.
What is one assumption we make with regards to peoples will to live?
We assume that if we can explain to a person that their behaviour is life-threatening and they understand this, then they will want to change this behaviour. However, for some reason this isnt the case.
Many people with drug and alcohol problems have mental health issues.
What are the key things that Miller and Rollnick advise us to do?
Avoid:
1) premature focus trap.
2) confrontation-denial trap
3) labelling: alcoholic, addict.
4) blaming
5) questions and answers trap
6) ‘I am the expert’ trap
Prochaska, J.O et al (1986) suggests what?
That the approach the practioner takes directly contributes to the effectiveness of the Brief Advice session.
Should: Be empathic and non-judgemental Be authoritative - advise reduction. Deflect denial: Highlight that the individual is responsible for change.
What is the SPOC system?
Some areas operate a Single Point Of Contact system where there is a number/website details of who to refer someone to if you think someone is dependent on alcohol or drugs.
