Why did cities become magnets for immigrants & rural Americans in the late 1800’s?
Attracted by jobs in factories or service industries, With little money you could open a shop, Offered variety, promise, some glamour, Increase children’s opportunities> education
What job opportunities did urban areas offer women?
Factory work, take in boarders, do piecework (sewing), or become a domestic servant
Educated women> teachers, secretaries,typists
What made the move from farm to factory work difficult?
Adjusting to the dim light & narrow confines, Pace of the work> schedules w/ no slow seasons
What was the benefit of the farm to factory transition?
Factory work paid wages in cash> sometimes scarce on family farms
Opportunities> excitement & variety of city life

How did public transportation change urban areas?
Made cities cleaner; allowed some people to move out; leaving behind poorer people
How did city design begin to change in the late 1890’s?
Designed to make cities more functional & beautiful, Segregated parts of the city by zoning or designating certain areas for particular functions, park & recreational space
