Reservation
Specific areas set aside by the government for the Indian’s use
> No freedom to roam the Plains= Indians faced poverty & suppression
> Controversial then & now
Sand Creek Massacre
(Fall 1864) incident in which Colorado militia killed a camp of unarmed Indians
> Spawned another round of warfare as Plains Indians joined forces to repel white settlement
Battle of Little Bighorn
(June 1876) battle in which the Sioux defeated US army troops (Cluster & all his men)
> Led US government to step up efforts
Wounded knee
(1890) US army killed more than 100 men, women, children- ended Ghost Dance War
> Last major conflict in Indian conflict
Assimilate
To be absorbed into the main culture of a society
> The idea behind reservations- Indians becoming ‘Americans’
Dawes Act
(1887) law which divided reservation land into private property> 160 acre of land- Indians were forced on & to do what the government wanted
Vigilante
self-appointed law enforcers who punished law-breakers
> Not always justice
Land grant
Wide stretches of land on both sides of track routes given by Congress to railroad
> Sped up transcontinental railroad
Open-range system
The system for raising livestock in the west prior to the arrival of eastern settlers
> Property not fenced in= free-range
Homestead Act
(1862) law that gave 160 acres of land to citizens willing to live & cultivate it for 5 years
> Encouraged movement
Exoduster
African American farmers led by, Benjamin Singleton, moved to Kansas & Oklahoma, planted crops & established towns
> ‘Promised Land’
