Nativism
Belief that native-born white Americans were superior to newcomers> challenge to immigrants in late 1800’s
Steerage
Third class> worst accommodations on the ship, located below decks w/ no private cabins, crowded & dirty -> Illness spread quickly- rough weather forced passengers in cramped quarters

Chinese Exclusion Act
(1882) prohibited immigration by Chinese laborers, limited civil rights of Chinese immigrants already in the US & forbade the naturalization of Chinese residents> 1st immigration restriction in US

Low-cost multifamily housing designed to squeeze in as many families as possible> home to immigrants & urban worked
Gilded Age
term coined by Mark Twain to describe the post-Reconstruction era which was characterized by a facade of prosperity
Conspicuous Consumerism
people wanted & bought the many products on the market- show off
-> Emphasis on life change caused by industralization
Mass Culture
similar cultural patterns in a society as a result of the spread of transportation , communication, advertising
Vaudeville
type of show, including dancing, singing, comedy sketches> became popular in late 19th century
