Hypotheses Flashcards
Aim
A precise statement of why a study is taking place
Hypotheses
Precise, testable research prediction
Null hypothesis
A statement to predict there will be no difference between conditions
/no correlation between 2 variables
Alternative/research hypothesis options
Non-directional hypothesis (two tailed) Directional hypothesis (one-tailed)
Non directional when
Little or no conclusive precious research
When directional hypothesis
When past research has suggested a certain outcome
Directional hypothesis (one tailed)
A prediction statement that states the direction of how the difference or correlation will be shown
Caffeine will increase reaction time
Non-directional hypothesis (two tailed)
A prediction statement that does not state the direction that the IV will have on the DV, byut says there will be a difference / doesnt state nature of correlation
How to write hypothesis
- Alternative research or null
- Directional or non-directiona
- Difference or correlation
(If difference is it IGD MPD RMP
Operationalise
Directional hypothesis example
The experimental condition will perform better on the DV than the control condition
There will be a +- correlation between CV1 and CV2
Non-directional hypothesis examples
There will be a difference in the DV between he control condition and the experimental condition
There will be a correlation between CV1 and CV2
Null hypothesis example
There will be no different in thr DV between the control and experimental conditions
There will be no correlation betweeen CV1 and CV2
