Hypothalamus And Pituitary Glands Flashcards
What is the pituitary stalk called? What does it connect?
Infundibulum
Connects the hypothalamus and the pituitary glands
What does the pituitary gland sit in?
The sella turcica (socket of bone)
Name some processes that the hypothalamus and pituitary glands modulate
Body growth Reproduction Adrenal gland function Water homeostasis Milk secretion Lactation Thyroid gland function Puberty
Where does the anterior pituitary originate from?
Oral ectoderm (rathke’s pouch)
Where does the posterior pituitary gland originate from?
Neuroectoderm (Primitive brain tissue)
Why is the posterior pituitary gland incorrectly named?
It does not synthesis hormones, it only stored and releases them therefore it is technically not a gland
What two hormones are released by the posterior pituitary gland?
Oxytocin and antidiurectic hormone
Where are oxytocin and antidiurectic hormones produced?
Supraoptic and paraventricular nuclei of the hypothalamus (both secrete both hormones)
*transported down infundibulum by neurocrine secretion
What kind of hormones does the hypothalamus produce?
Tropic hormones- their function is to control the synthesis and release of hormones in the pituitary glands
How do hormones travel from the hypothalamus to the anterior pituitary gland?
Transported down axons and stored in median eminence before release into the hypophyseal portal system
Travel in the hypophyseal portal system to the anterior pituitary gland
What kind of signalling functions does the anterior pituitary gland have?
Neurocrine (how the anterior pituitary gland itself is stimulated)
Endocrine
Autocrine + paracrine
The hormones produced by nerve cells in the hypothalamus act via two distinct neurocrine pathways, what are they?
- Direct effects on distant target tissue via oxytocin and ADH from the posterior pituitary
- Hormones secreted exclusively into hypophyseal portal system affect endocrine cells within the anterior pituitary
What function does OT (oxytocin) serve?
Milk let down
Uterus contractions during birth
There are 6 tropic hormones produced by the hypothalamus. These have direct effects on the releases of anterior pituitary hormones. What are they?
- TRH-thryotropin releasing hormone
- PIH - prolactin release-inhibiting hormone (/dopamine)
- CRH- corticotropin releasing hormone
- GnRH - gonadotropin releasing hormone
- GHRH- growth hormone releasing hormone
- GHIH - growth hormone inhibiting hormone (somatostatin)
What does TRH (thyrotropin releasing hormone) do?
Causes the release of TSH / thyroid stimulating hormone
