Hypothalamus and pituitary Flashcards
How is the hypothalamus connected to the pituitary gland?
Pituitary stalk
How is the anterior pituitary connected to the hypothalamus?
Blood vessels (portal vessels)
How is the posterior pituitary connected to the hypothalamus?
Neurosecretory neurons
What hormones does the posterior pituitary secrete?
Oxytocin and ADH
What is the function of oxytocin?
Positive feedback during child brith and suckling.
Mammary glands
What is the function of ADH?
Increases reabsorption of water when body water is low
What stimulates the production of hormones from the anterior pituitary?
Neurohormones arriving in the portal veins from hypothalamus. Arrive at a cluster of endocrine cells which synthesise the hormone
Where are hormones released form the pituitary gland made?
Hypothalamus
What hormones do anterior pituitary secrete?
FSH and LH Growth hormone TSH Prolactin ACTH
What are tropic hormones?
Hormones whose target is another endocrine cell
What is a trophic hormone?
Any hormone that stimulates an element of cell growth in its target
Which hormones secreted by anterior pituitary are tropic hormones?
ACTH
TSH
FSH
LH
Which hormones secreted by anterior pituitary are non-tropic?
Growth hormone
Prolactin
What is hyperthyroidism?
Excess thyroid hormone
Describe the steps that lead to the release of thyroxine
TRH (TSH releasing hormone) from hypothalamus.
TSH from anterior pituitary
Thyroxine from thyroid
