Hypothalamus and limbic system Flashcards
1
Q
What are the nuclei of the anterior hypothalamus what are functions of each?
A
- Anterior: Thermoregulation (cooling) . . AC = Air conditioning
- Suprachiasmatic: Circadian rhythms
- Preoptic area: secretes GnRH
- Supraoptic: secretes ADH
- Paraventricular: Secretes oxytocin, CRH, and TRH
2
Q
what are the nuclei of the Tuberal hypothalamus and what does each do?
A
- Arcuate: Secretes GHRH, dopamine, and GnRH (pulsatile), and regulates appetite
- Lateral: regulates hunger, inhibited by leptin (Damage leads to anorexia and weight loss)
- Ventromedial: regulates satiety, stimulated by leptin (Damage lead to obesity and savage behavior)
- Dorsomedial: Regulates hunger (Stimulates leads to obesity and savage behavior)
3
Q
What are the nuclei in the posterior hypothalamus and what does each do?
A
- Posterior: thermoregulation (warming)
- Mammillary: memory
4
Q
Bilateral damage to hippocampus causes what
A
anterograde amnesia
5
Q
Describe Kluver-Bucy syndrome?
A
- Damage to bilateral amygdala
- no fear
- disinhibition
- Extremely curious
- Hyperorality
- Docility
- Hypersexuality
