Hypothalamic Nuclei Flashcards
Anterior Nuclei
Decreases body temperature (ants at a hot picnic or turn on the A/C)
Posterior Hypothalamic Nuclei
Increases body temperature during hypothermia (freeze my ass (posterior) off)
Lateral Hypothalamic Nuclei
Mediates Hunger, stimulated by ghrelin (ghrelin makes you hunghre)
Ventromedial Hypothalamic Nuclei
Mediates Satiety, stimulated by leptin which is produced by fat
Supraoptic and paraventricular Hypothalamic Nuclei
Synthesizes and secretes ADH and oxytocin
Suprachiasmatic
Regulation of circadian rhythm
Arcuate
Secretion of dopamine, GH
Preoptic nucleus
Thermoregulation, sexual behavior, releases GnRH-producing neurons to migrate from olfactory pit
What area of the hypothalamus is involved in kallman syndrome?
Preoptic nucleus, delayed puberty and impaired sense of smell because of failure of GnRH neurons to migrate including failure of neurons to migrate through the cribriform plate.
thiamine deficiency affects what part of the limbic system?
Mammillary bodies (associated with memory loss)
What part of the limbic system is most susceptible to hypoxia?
The Hippocampus
What part of the limbic system is in charge of emotions and decision making?
the amygdala
Bilateral damage to the amygdala can cause what syndrome resulting in hyperorality, hypersexuality, and hyperphagia?
Kluver-Bucy syndrome (bilateral destruction of temporal lobes, could be from herpes simplex encephalitis–> can be treated with acyclovir in this case)
