Aphasia Flashcards
Motor speech
Broca’s area
Inferior frontal gyrus
Making sense of words
Wernickes
Superior temporal gyrus
Tract that connects Broca to Wernicke
Arcuate fasciculus
Blood supply to Broca and Wernicke
MCA esp terminal branches can have more specific deficits
Can’t make words but can understand what’s being said, can’t repeat, usually very frustrated. This is what kind of aphasia?
Broca’s aphasia (expressive aphasia)
Can’t understand what’s being said, is speaking but makes no sense, can’t repeat. Usually not frustrated
Wernicke’s Aphasia (receptive aphasia)
Can speak, can understand, but can’t repeat what someone is saying
Conduction aphasia (damage to the arcuate fasciculus that connects Broca and Wernicke)
Can’t understand, can’t speak, can’t repeat
Global aphasia
Any of the broca or wernicke aphasia that present with the ability to repeat just means that an area around broca or wernicke has been affected but the speech centers have been spared.
Broca (Frontal lobe affected)
Wernicke (temporal lobe affected)
