What is hypopituitarism?
Deficiency of one or more of the anterior pituitary hormones
Most common cause?
Tumor
How to diagnose?
ACTH deficiency, LOW cortisol, IGF-1, test and estrogen. This is a combined disease of all aspects
What is the first step to treating hypopituitarism?
Glucocorticoid treatment, to fix the low cortisol levels first.
What is the next step?
Hormonal replacement therapy, to fix hypothyroidism, GH in children, test in men, estrogen in females
What is Posterior Hypopituitarism?
Diabetes insipidus
Causes of diabetes insipidus?
Post operative after tumor resection, there is lack of vasopressin secretion from posterior pituitary
Features of diabetes insipidus?
Polyuria, intense thirst
How do we diagnose central diabetes insipidus?
Water deprivation test, that is collecting urine after fasting
How do we treat central diabetes insipidus?
Give patient vasopressin
