Hypoglycaemia Flashcards
If a patient is experiencing hypoglycaemia, what may be noticed during assessment of airway?
initially the patient will be talking, this will stop as they lose consciousness
If a patient is experiencing hypoglycaemia, what may be noticed during assessment of breathing?
initially breathing rate will increase
If a patient is experiencing hypoglycaemia, what may be noticed during assessment of circulation?
initially heart rate will increase
If a patient is experiencing hypoglycaemia, what may be noticed during assessment of disability?
initially the patient will be alert but may become unconscious
If a patient is experiencing hypoglycaemia, what may be noticed during assessment of exposure?
the patient will be irritable, confused, pale, dizzy, hungry and have blurred vision
How can hypoglycaemia be treated in practice?
- glucose
- sugary food or drink
- glucagon injection
What quantity glucagon should be injected for a hypoglycaemic patient?
1mg
What is the function of glucagon?
- increases the concentration of blood glucose
- promotes gluconeogenesis
- promotes glycogenolysis
- converts glycogen to glucose
What is a normal blood glucose reading for a type 1 diabetic?
5-7mmol/l
At what blood glucose reading would a type 1 diabetic likely be unconscious?
below 3mmol/l
What determines whether a hypoglycaemic patient receives glucose or glucagon?
whether they are conscious and cooperative or not
If a hypoglycaemic patient is conscious and cooperative, what should they be provided with?
- 10-20mg oral glucose
- sugary drink
If a hypoglycaemic patient is unconscious and uncooperative, what should they be provided with?
- 1mg IM glucagon injection
- oral glucose on regaining consciousness
How should IM glucagon be prepared?
- inject diluting solution into vial
- vial contains glucagon powder
- swirl vial
- do not shake as causes foaming
- draw solution back into syringe
What technique should be used to administer IM glucagon?
- Z track technique
- spread skin
- advance needle in skin at 90 degrees
- aspirate
- inject for 30 secs
- pull out
- release tension
