Hypoglycaemia Flashcards
normal blood glucose level?
4-7
below 4?
hypo
what are 2 ways to describe hypoglycaemia?
symptomatic or asymptomatic
symptomatic hypoglycaemia 2 categories?
mild - treat themselves
severe - assistance of a third party
relative hypoglycaemia?
person feels low but glucose level is above 4
- usually in people with poor glycaemic control and have become habituated to high blood glucose levels - say 12
may fall to 5 an feel like they are having a hypo
Can symptomatic hypoglycaemia be mild or severe?
no, only severe
causes of hypoglycaemia?
insulin therapy
sulfonylurea therapy
How does sulfonylurea therapy work?
stimulate insulin production from the pancreas
they do this whether your glucose level is 4 or 15
What may prolong the duration of action of sulfonylurea?
renal failure - risk of hypoglycaemia for longer
Who gets more hypos, T2DM or T1DM?
T2DM less hypos
symptoms of hypoglycaemia?
confusion
sweating
trembling
hunger
palpitations
headache
drowsiness
odd behaviour
speech difficulty
incoordination
malaise
Why is glocose metabolism important for brain function?
continuous supply of glucose essential for the brain
main parts of the body that use glucose?
brain
muslce
adipose tissue
adverse effects of hypoglycaemia?
1) neurological
- coma
- seizure
- hemiplegia
- other focal neurology
2) fracture
3) cardiac
- arrhythmia
- MI
