What is hypoglycaemia?
A
- Common complication of pts with Diabetes type 1 and type 2
- Is a result of low blood sugar
- <4mmol (28 days and older)
- <2.6mmol (<28 days old)

Signs and symptoms of Hypoglycaemia
A
- Neurologic symptoms: decreased LOC, dizziness, headache, irritability, weakness, lack of concentration, behavioural changes, tearfulness/crying
- Adrenergic symptoms: trembling or shaking, hunger, numbness around lips and fingers, diaphoresis, lightheadedness

Hypoglycaemia Treatment?
A
- Goal of treatment is to increase pt’s blood glucose level (BGL) back to a normal level
- If pt can eat/drink, get pt to do so e.g. glucose gel
- If decreased LOC, IV glucose is main treatment line
- If IV access unavailable, glucagon can be given IM

Adult Glucose 10% dose for hypoglycaemia
A
- 15g Bolus IV, continue to repeat whilst indicated
- This dosage given to anyone 10yrs and older

Paediatric Glucose 10% dose for hypoglycaemia
A
- Applies to pt’s 10yrs of age and younger
- 0.2g/kg IV, max dose 15g
