What is Croup?
A
- Respiratory disease common in children
- Viral infection which causes airway obstruction
- Most common in children between 6 months and 3 years

What are 3 factors that help determine croup?
A
- Age of the child
- Character of the stridor
- Toxicity of the child - Children with croup do not appear toxic e.g. pale, febrile, poorly perfused

Signs and symptoms of mild croup?
A
- Barking cough (sound like a seal)
- Nil or intermittent stridor
- No cyanosis

Signs and symptoms of moderate croup?
A
- Persisting stridor at rest
- Some tracheal tug or chest wall recession
- May have cyanosis
- Can be placated and is interested in surroundings

Signs and symptoms of severe croup
A
- Persisting/soft stridor at rest
- Cyanosis
- Apathetic or restless
- Marked tracheal tug/chest wall recession
- Palpable paradox

Signs of impending respiratory failure from croup?
A
- Increasing upper airway obstruction
- Fatigue
- Sternal/intercostal recession
- Asynchronous chest wall and abdominal movement
- Hypercarbia

A
- Nil specific treatment

- Oxygen
