What causes Hyperthyroidism?
Thyroid adenoma (>70%)
Thyroid Carcinoma (1-2%)
What is the most common endocrine disease in cats?
Hyperthyroidism (rare in dogs)
Clinical signs of Hyperthyroidism
-Polyphagia, vomiting, weight loss
- Tachycardia +/- murmur
- Increased systolic BP
- palpable enlarged thyroid
- Aggressive behavior + hyperactivity
- Blindness w retinal detachment
What is palpated during diagnosis of Hyperthyroidism?
Enlarged Thyroid
Diagnostic labs
- CBC/ chem: rule out other organ system failures (thyroid hormone levels are increased)
What other diagnostic test is used to confirm Hyperthyroidism?
Nuclear Scintigraphy
Surgical treatment
Curative, Preserve parathyroid
Drug therapy treatment
Antithyroid drug (inhibits the synthesis of thyroid hormone by disrupting the incorporation of iodine)
What treatment therapy causes destruction of disease tissue?
Radioactive Iodine- 131
What precaution should be taken with patients receiving radioactive iodine- 131 therapy?
Their Waste products will be hazardous for up to 14 days
