Hypertensives Flashcards
What are the hypertensive drug classes we use?
A - B - C - D
- ACE Inhibitors
- Beta Blockers
- Calcium channel blockers
- Diuretics (Thiazide is a big one)
What is the common ending for all beta blockers?
- olol (beta fish and lolipop)
What are beta blockers indicated for?
H’s and A’s
- HTN
- Heart failure
- Angina
- Annuerysm
What are the side effects of beta blockers?
- Bradycardia
- Hypotension
- Bronchospasm
What is the common ending for Calcium channel blockers?
- diping (cows dipoing their chips) (htn meds)
- Cows have swollen legs
- Cow milk makes me consitpated
- verapamil (cardioselective)
- diltiazem (cardioselective)
What is the mechanism of calcium channel blockers?
- slowing contractions down by blocking electrical signals
- vasodilation
What are calcium channel blockers good for?
- HTN
* Arrhythmias (remember electrical signals via calcium channels)
What are the big side effects of CCB’s?
Cows have fat feet * peripheral edema Cow Milk fucks my GI up * constipation I'm flushed because I'm constipated * flushing
Contraindications for CCB?
Severe cardiac issues
What are the endings for ACE inhibitors?
Ace of Hearts Holding Chain of Pearls around a chick with Big Lips Sucking a Banana
- pril
What are ace inhibitors used for?
HTN
What are the major side effects of ace inhibitors?
Angiotensin Enzymes are in the lungs
* Dry hacking cough

- Angioedema
- Hyperkalemia
Where is angiotensin found?
In the lungs
Are alpha and beta Sympathetic or Parasympathetic?
Sympathetic
What happens when you block beta receptors?
You constrict the vessels in the lungs because you are restricting that sympathetic response (remember lung vessels dilate in fight or flight mode to received more O2)
* Bronchospasm
Remember Parasympathetic response due to blocking beta receptors
- hypotension
- bradycardia
