A
> 140/90 mmHg

Causes of HTN
A
- 90% primary, aetiology unknown
- Endocrine disease: Conn’s, DM, Cushing’s, hyperthyroidism
- Renal disease: glomerulonephritis, polycystic kidneys, renovascular
- Drugs - NSAIDs, corticosteroids, OCP,
- Lifestyle: obesity, high salt + cholesterol, sedentary lifestyle

Signs and symptoms of HTN
A
- Asymptomatic
- Features of underlying disease: renal disease, radiofemoral delay, renal bruits
- End-organ damage e.g retinopathy

Management of HTN (drugs)
A
- <55 and not afro-carribean/black african - ACE-i/ARB, if not then CCB
- ACE-i/ARB +CCB OR thiazide-like diuretic
- ACE-i/ARB + CCB + thiazide-like diuretic
- Resistant HTN: add spironolactone if blood potassium <4mmol/L, a-blocker or b-blocker if >4mmol/L

Management of HTN (lifetstyle)
A
- Lose weight
- Low salt + fat diet
- Smoking cessation
- Reduce alcohol
