Describe the BP levels for Stage 1, 2 and severe hypertension
1: >140/90
2:>160/100
Severe: s>180 or d>110
At what age should Stage 1 hypertension patients be started on treatment
<80yo + at least 1 of
- Target organ damage
- Established heart disease
- Renal disease
- Diabetes
- 10 year CVS risk 20% or more
At what age should Stage 2 hypertension patients be started on treatment
Any age
Target BP for <80yo on treatment
<140/90
Target BP for >80yo on treatment
<150/90
First line hypertension drug in a <55yo white patient
ACEi or ARB
First line hypertension drug in a >55yo/ black patient

Why are the first line treatments different for patients <55yo vs older
Younger pts have high renin hypertension
Older pts have low renin hypertension (more salt related)
What drugs should be added on to ACEi + CCB if BP is still not adequately controlled
Diuretic (loop or thiazide-like)
Alpha/beta blocker if diuretic not suitable
What prophylactic drug (at what dose) should be given to pregnant women with risk of pre-eclampsia
