Primarily idiopathic Renal disease stenosis Obesity Smoking
What are the symptoms of hypertension?
Can be asymptomatic until severe Flushed Headaches Syncope Fatigue Blurred vision in severe cases
What are the signs of hypertension?
Blood pressure exceeding 140/90
130/80 in diabetics
What are the complications of hypertension?
End organ damage
What is the non pathological definition of hypertension?
The blood pressure above which the benefit of treatment outweighs the risk in terms of morbidity and mortality
Give examples of instances in which blood pressure varies throughout the day
Standing up
Mental stress
Physical stress
Define type 1 hypertension?
Clinical blood pressure 140/90 mmHg or higher
ABPM Daytime average 135/85 mmHg or higher
Define type 2 hypertension?
Clinical blood pressure i160/100 mmHg or higher
ABPM daytime average 150/95 mmHg or higher
Define type 3/severe hypertension
Clinical systolic pressure of 180 mmHg or higher
Clinical diastolic blood pressure is 110 mmHg or higher
