Hypersensitivity Flashcards
1
Q
Describe type I hypersensitivity
A
- Allergy
- IgE mediated
- Immediate
- Genetically hypersensitive T(helper) cells
2
Q
Rx for type I hypersensitivity
A
- Antihistamines
- Corticosteroids
- Adrenaline
- Allergen avoidance
3
Q
Describe atopic dermatitis
A
- Eczema
- Exposed + flexor surfaces
- IgE involved
- “Leaky” skin allows more allergen in and water out
4
Q
Describe type II hypersensitivity
A
- Cytotoxic (directed to RBC)
- Diagnosed by Coomb’s test
5
Q
Describe type III hypersensitivity
A
- Anitgen-antibody/immune complex formation
- Deposition in tissues
- Activates phagocytes, causing damage
- “Self-reactive” B/T-cells circulate
6
Q
In type III hypersensitivity what is deposited in tissues and why does it cause damage
A
- Complexes
- Too small for macrophages to clean them up
- Complement is activated, causing inflammation
7
Q
Example of type III hypersensitivity
A
Systemic Lupus Erythematosis
8
Q
Describe type IV hypersensitivity
A
T-cell mediated
9
Q
Example of type IV hypersensitivity
A
Contact dermatitis
10
Q
Describe contact dermatitis
A
- Inflammation of the skin.
- Due to exposure to allergens or irritants
11
Q
Rx for contact dermatitis
A
- Topical steroid
- Allergen avoidance
