Hypermetria Flashcards
What does it mean?
Inability to grade forces appropriately for the distance and speed aspects of a task; movements are generally too large for their intended purpose; can be UE, LE, or both
Generally associated w/ injury where?
Cerebellum
Can it improve/will motor learning work?
Depends - VERY RESISTANT TO CHANGE
Gait pattern?
Ataxic - decreases hip/knee flexion - will circumduct or lateral trunk lean (decreases balance - give them an AD - RW or GTW - to decrease lat lean)
Key tests and signs: nonequilibrium coordination
Difficulty directing movement toward a target, resulting in undershooting or overshooting
Abnormal rhythm and uncoordinated during RAMs
No change w/ practice
Key tests and signs: movement
Able to move against gravity
Lack of fluidity
Associated signs: postural control
Generally able to sit w/ UE support; may be able to sit unsupported
Unable to stand unsupported or stands w/ wide BOS and high guard
Associated signs: gait
Variable foot placement in step length and step width
Generally requires assistance
Associated signs: reach and grasp
Unable to reach to targets
Difficulty grasping small or light objects
Differential movement dx:
Movement pattern coordination deficit
Expected outcome
Ambulation in home w/ AD and maybe bracing
May require WC in community
I w/ minimal UE ADLs using adaptive equipment
Associated medical dx:
CVA
Cerebellar degeneration
MS
CP
