Hyperhidrosis Flashcards
What is the definition of hyperhidrosis?
Sweating in excess of normal body temperature regulation
What is the first-line treatment of primary focal hyperhidrosis affecting axillae, palmar, or plantar areas?
Topical preparation containing 20% aluminium chloride hexahydrate
(Spray, roll-on, or solution)
If a patient presents to a GP with primary focal hyperhidrosis, when can referral to a specialist be considered?
If response to treatment with a topical preparation containing 20% aluminium chloride hexahydrate is inadequate or not tolerated after 6 weeks
Inotophoretic treatment can be used in specialist management of hyperhidrosis of which body areas? (2)
Plantar
Palmar
Which topical solution is used in the iontophoretic treatment of hyperhidrosis of plantar and palmar areas by specialists?
Topical glycopyrronium bromide (0.05% solution)
What is iontophoretic treatment?
An electrical current is passed through skin soaked in water or a solution. This allows ionised particles to cross the normal skin barrier
What is the specialist treatment of severe hyperhidrosis of the axillae unresponsive to topical antiperspirant or other antihidrotic treatment?
Botox containing botulinum toxin type A complex (intradermal)
Why does oxybutynin hydrochloride only have limited use in the management of hyperhidrosis?
Due to antimuscarinic adverse effects
Oxybutynin hydrochloride [unlicensed indication] can cause a reduction in sweat secretion through its effects on muscarinic receptors near the sweat glands
What are the indications for the use of aluminium chloride hexahydrate?
- Hyperhidrosis
- Bromidrosis (foul smelling body odor related to sweat)
- Intertrigo (inflammation caused by skin-to-skin friction)
- Prevention of tinea pedis and related conditions
What class of drug is glycopyrronium bromide?
Antimuscarinic
