Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Flashcards
Wht is hbot
It is a type of treatment used to speed up healing of carbon monoxide poisioning, gangerine, stubborn wound and infection
It is aa special chamber to breath in pure o2 in air pressure level 1.5 to 3 times more thn normal
Goal is to fill the blood with enough o2 to repair tissues and restore normal body functions
Principle
Therapeutic administration of o2pure
Pressurized environment
Pressure>atmospheric pressure
Pulsed treatment
Daltons and henrys law
Daltons Law
It states that in mixture of non reacting gases the total pressure exerted is equal to the sum of partial pressure of individual gases
P1+P2=Ptotal
Henrys Law
The amount of dissolved gase in liquid is proportional to its partial pressure above the liquid
Types
Monoplace Hbot chamber
Single person
More privacy
Quicker treatment
More comfort
Advantages
One operator for many chamber
Cheap
Installed in pts room
Disadvantages
Claustrophobia
No examination/intervention like cpr during breathlessness
Multiplace Hbot chamber
Fit more thn 1 person
Instead of filling entire space with o2
100%pure o2 through mask hood
Used in hospitals trauma care
Advantages
Physical examination is possible
Less claustrophobic
Disadvantages
Expensive
More operator required
Cross infection
Mechanism of action
Effect of pressure
Reduce volume of gas bubbles allow them to freely move through blood vessels therefore reducing chnce of infraction. This effect results in gas embolism and decompression sickness
Effect of increasing o2 pressure
Administration of o2 at high pressure helps in rapid elimination of toxic gases like carbon monoxide poisioning
Effect of reactive vasoconstriction
Hbot act as an alpha adrenergic agent tht causes reactive vasoconstriction in small vessels thereby reducing vascular edema without altering normal tissue oxygenation this prprty helps in severe injury and thermal burns
Antibacterial effect
Most antibacterial defence mechanism are o2 dependent HBo optimizes antieffevtive prprties of pokymorpho nuclear nutrophil through production of enzymes and super oxide ions.
Anti ischemic effect
HBO therapy results in excess if dissolved o2 in blood also it also enables deformed rbc tonreach ischemic tissue
Healing effect
It promotes osteoclast and osteoblast
Stimulates angiogenesis hence used in the management of refractory lesions ,extensive burns and compromised
Indications
