Hyperaldosteronism Flashcards
what does angiotensin 2 stimulate the release of
aldosterone
what does aldosterone do
increase Na reabsorption
increase K+ and H+ excretion
what is primary hyperaldosteronism
too much aldosterone from adrenal glands
what are some causes of primary hyperaldosteronism
adrenal adenoma (Conns)
billateral adrenal hyperplasia
familial hyperaldosteronism
adrenal carcinoma
what are some causes of secondary hyperaldosteronism
renal artery stenosis
renal artery obstruction
HF
what is secondary hyperaldosteronism
excessive renin secretion from the adrenal glands to release aldosterone
due to disproportionately low BP in the kidneys compared to the systemic BP
what is the first line investigation for hyperaldosteronism
renin aldosterone ration
primary - low renin, high aldosterone
secondary - high renin, high aldosterone
what other investigations could you do for hyperaldosteronism
CT/ MRI of abdomen
renal doppler USS
CT angiogram
symptoms of hyperaldosteronism
vague but can include:
fatigue
weakness
muscle cramp/ spasm
headache
polyuria and nocturia
what is the management for hyperaldosteronism
aldosterone antagonist ( spironolactone)
if renal: percutaneous renal artery angioplasty
