Q

Why don’t we like sulfur ?

A
  • It produces pollutants SO2 and SO3
  • It’s a source of corrosion
  • It smells bad
  • It’s a poison for catalyst

Q

Why don’t we like nitrogen in crude ?

A
  • It’s a basic compound that can poison catalysts (with acidic function)
  • It’s more difficult to extract than S

8
Q

Why is hydrodemetallization a complex and costly process ?

A
  • Very high pressure (200 bar)
  • Large amount of catalyst (because we trap the metal in the catalyst)
  • We need new technologies to remove the catalyst when it’s saturated with metal

14
Q

What is the typical amount of catalyst needed depending on the cut (for 100 t/h of feed) ?

A
  • Light cut : 30 t
  • Gasoil : 75 t

15
Q

Why do we need more catalyst for heavy feeds ?

A

The heavier the feed, the harder it is to treat, the more residence time we need and therefore the bigger the reactor and the more catalyst we need
