The earths outer layer of water. It unites all water forms.

Solid, liquid, gas

Q

What and how are deep currents created ?

A

They are caused by temperature and density. The heavy water (higher density) sinks. The light water (low density) rises. This causes movement on the ocean floor.

Q

Does cold water rise or sink ? Why?

A

Sinks, because it is dense.

Q

What is thermohaline ? (Conveyor belt ) What does it do ?

A

Deep currents that create ocean circulation. It mixes water around the world and it regulates the earth temperature.

9
Q

What are the steps in thermohaline process ? (Conveyor belt )

A

Step 1: Sun at equator heats water which make it evaporate.
Step 2: Density increases, water sinks causing ocean circulation.
Step 3: At pole, ice caps melt, dilutes water, water less dense, water rises.

Q

What are human disturbances on watershed ?

A

The creation of hydroelectric power plants which disturbs the ecosystems because the contaminates of the basin can be spread anywhere.

Q

Why is the ocean so important ? What does it do to the earth.

A

Oceans are important because they absorb heat so they help regulate the temperature of the earth.

12
Q

How does salt concentration get diluted ?

A

The ice caps that melt have fresh water, the fresh water dilutes the salt concentration.

Q

What influences water temperature ? (3)

A
  • The season because of the angle of sunlight
  • The latitude, (closer to equator is hotter(
  • The depth, (deeper the water, more clouds, less sunlight)

16
Q

What is ice flow ?

A

It forms when the surface water freezes because of cold temperature and it breaks off and floats in ocean.

17
Q

What are glaciers ?

A

They are broken pieces of ice that fall into water. They are called icebergs.

18
Q

How are glaciers formed ?

A

They are formed by compressing snow on land.

19
Q

What are impacts of melting ice (3)

A
  • Thermohaline currents (Conveyor belt )
  • Rise in sea level because thawing of glaciers
  • Less ice which increases global climate
