Hydrometeorological and Coastal Processes and Hazards Flashcards
Seasonal reversal of wind.
Major wind system that seasonally reverses its direction – such as one that blows for approximately six months from the northeast and six months from the southwest.
monsoon
Southwest monsoon
habagat
Northeast monsoon
amihan
Characterized by hot and humid weather with frequent rainfall.
Usually starts in May and ends in October
Habagat season
Characterized by moderate temperature with little to no rainfall.
Experienced as cool northeast wind drawing cold dry air from Siberia.
Usually starts in November and ends in February.
amihan season
Intense circular storm that originates over warm tropical oceans and is characterized by low atmospheric pressure, high winds, and heavy rains.
Tropical cyclones
Whirling funnel-shaped cloud.
Develops in low heavy cumulonimbus clouds.
Tornado
weathering away of rocks at the crust, caused by wave action, and tidal and wave currents, which dissolve chemical in rocks
Coastal erosion
the sediment is submersed under water and eventually replaced back to its original location
Submersion
movement of salt water into fresh water aquifer.
Sea level rise would cause saltwater to intrude in surface and groundwater near the coast.
Saltwater intrusion
