Geologic Hazards Flashcards
It is located along the Western Pacific Basin and lies between two tectonic plates whose interactions give rise to geologic processes.
Philippines
It is also part of the circum-Pacific seismic belt and is within the subduction zones called the ___
ring of fire
a dangerous phenomenon, substance, human activity or
condition that may cause loss of life, injury or other health impacts, property damage, loss of livelihoods and services, social and economic disruption, or environmental damage.
HAZARD
Known as the Philippine Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Act of 2010
REPUBLIC ACT 10121
Anything that may cause potential harm to humans.
Dangerous situations/events that carries a threat to humans.
Hazard
Event that actually harm humans and disrupts the operation of the society.
Disaster
are natural processes or phenomena that may cause the loss of life, injury or other health impacts, property damage, loss of livelihood and services, social, and economic disruption, or environmental damage.
Geologic Hazards
are ground shaking, landslides, liquefaction and surface rupture
Primary earthquake hazards
include tsunami, seiche, flooding, and fire
Secondary earthquake hazards
shaking of the ground caused by the passage of seismic waves, forms of energy that travel through the different layers of Earth caused by vibration or movement.
Ground Shaking
occurs when ground movement happens on a fault line and breaks through to the surface.
Ground Rupture(surface rupture)
occurs when seismic causes loose materials in the soil to mix with groundwater or soil saturated with water.
The structures on the ground slowly sink
Liquefaction
also known as the sinking of the ground.
It is the lowering of the land due to an earthquake on a fault line.
. Earthquake-induced ground subsidence
series of waves generated when an oceanic body of water is rapidly disturbed of an underwater earthquake and other activities such as volcanic eruption, undersea landslide, and explosion.
Tsunami
may happen during or after an earthquake when a weakened section of land falls off primarily due to gravity.
Earthquake-Induced Landslides
