Hydrocarbons Flashcards
What are hydrocarbons?
Hydrocarbons are compounds consisting of only hydrogen and carbon atoms.
What are the first four alkanes?
Methane (CH4).
Ethane (C2H6).
Propane (C3H8).
Butane (C4H10).
What is the fifth alkane?
Pentane (C5H12).
What is the trend between short chains and long chains?
Short chains have lower boiling point so less energy is used.
Short chains have a higher volatility (tendency to turn into a gas) than long chains.
Short chains have low viscosity (how easily it flows) long chains have high viscosity.
Short chains are have higher flammability (how easily it burns) than long chains.
What is the eighth alkane?
Octane (C8H18)
What is the tenth alkane?
Decane.
What is the twelfth alkane?
Dodecane.
