C9 Crude Oil And Fuels Flashcards
What is crude oil?
Mixture of many different carbon compunds
What is a mixture?
2 or more elements or compounds not chemically combined.
What are compounds that contain only carbon and hydrogen called?
Hydrocarbons.
What do you describe alkanes as?
Saturated hydrocarbons.
What are the first four alkanes?
Methane.
Ethane.
Propane.
Butane.
What are the properties of short chain hydrocarbons?
Low boiling point. High volatility(tendency to turn into gas). Low viscosity (very runny(viscosity=how easily it flows)). High flammability(how easily it burns).
What are the properties of long chain hydrocarbons?
High boiling point. Low volatility. High viscosity(thick). Low flammability(has smoky flame).
What is fractional distillation?
Separating fractions as each fraction boils at different temperature range.
What is it called when the carbon and hydrogen in the fuel are oxidised completely?
Complete combustion?
What happens when there is not enough Oxygen inside an engine?
Incomplete combustion.
What happens if there is incomplete combustion inside an engine?
Instead of all carbon in fuel turning into carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide also formed.
Is carbon monoxide a toxic gas?
Yes.
What is cracking?
The breaking down of larger hydrocarbons into smaller 1s.
What is the name of the reaction that takes place when hydrocarbons are cracked?
Thermal decomposition.
What are unsaturated hydrocarbons called?
Alkenes.
