Atoms Flashcards
What is an element?
A substance that contains only one type of atom.
What are compounds?
Two or more elements chemically bonded.
What is a mixture?
Two or more elements that are physically bonded.
What is fractional distillation?
Fractional distillation is the separation technique used to separate fractions with different boiling points.
What is chromatography?
The separation technique used to separate different dyes into the colours used to make them.
What is an ionic bond?
When a metal and a non-metal react it forms an ionic bond because, the metal loses an atom to gain a full outer shell (valence shell).
What are the first three elements in group 1?
Lithium, Sodium, Potassium.
What are the first four elements in group 4?
Fluorine, Chlorine, Bromine, Iodine.
Why is mercury not a typical transition element?
Mercury is not solid at room temperature.
What are the three states of matter and their state symbols?
Solid=(s).
Liquid=(l).
Gas=(g).
What are the charges of ions in group 1?
+1.
What are the charges of ions in group 2?
+2.
What are charges of ions in group 6?
-2.
What are the charges of ions in group 7?
-1.
What are hydrocarbons?
Compounds consisting of only Carbon and Hydrogen atoms.
