C1 Atomic Structure Flashcards
What are substances made of?
Tiny particles called atoms.
What are elements?
Substances made from only 1 type of atoms.
How many different atoms are there?
About 100.
How many different elements are there?
About 100.
What are groups?
The columns in the periodic table.
What is the Law of conservation of mass?
Total mass of the products formed in a reaction is equal to the total mass of the reactants.
What are the state symbols?
(s) .
(g) .
(l) .
(aq) .
What is a mixture made up of?
2 or more substances (elements or compounds) that are not chemically combined together.
What is the technique of filtration used for?
Separating substances that are insoluble in a particular solvent from those that are soluble in the solvent.
What does the atomic number of an atom represent?
Number of protons in each atom of an element.
Why do atoms have no overall charge?
Electrons + protons cancel each other out + as there are an equal number of electrons + protons in an element.
What is an ion?
A charged atom (or group of atoms).
What are isotopes?
Atoms of same element with different numbers of neutrons.
What are the noble gases?
The elements in group 0 or group 8.
