Hydrants Flashcards
What are the 2 sources of water?
- Static water, Open water (dams, rivers,)
- Reticulated water, closed water(anything in a pipe)
What are the 3 types of Reticulation systems?
- Trunk system (large pipes 600-3000mm in diameter
- Service mains ( 100-600mm residential and 150-600mm commercial)
- Ring mains (comes of service main to service a priority building like schools, hospitals).
Where is an AH (attack hydrant) found?
In a ring system
What can affect pressure?
1.Length of mains between reservoir/tank/pump
2.number of appliances connected
- Quantity of water being used by other consumers
- Number and size of hoses being used
What can effect flow?
Diameter of the main
Conditions of the internal pipe
Pressure at the main
Is operating
What are the different types of hydrants?
- Spring value hydrant
- High capacity hydrant
- Pillar hydrant
Describe the spruce valve hydrant?
- Has a ball value
- Stan pipe connects to the bayonet lug
Describe a standpipe?
- Has a hand wheel
- Has 2 story’s couplings
- Has a head
- Has handles
- Has a barrel
- Has a lug at the end

When a value is closed to fast and the water hits the end causing it to bounce back.
Describe a booster cabinet?
Has a minimum of 2 65mm delivery’s
Some have water outlets for hydrant use.
Has a sign that says the maximum pressure to use and tested
