Q
What are waxes and sphingolipids?
A
Waxes are Esters of long chain fatty acids and long chain alcohols. Sphingolipids do not contain glycerol but have a long chain alcohol called sphingosine as a part of their structure instead.
1
Q
What are phosphoacylglycerols?
A
Phosphoacylglycerols differ from triacylglycerols in having a phosphorus containing portion esterified to glycerol. These compounds are important components of biological membranes.
2
Q
What are glycolipids?
A
In glycolipids a carbohydrate portion is covalently bonded to the lipid.
3
Q
What are steroids?
A
Steroids have a characteristic fused ring structure. Other lipids are open chain compounds.
