HUMANIZED ENVIRONMENT Flashcards
MAN-LAND PARADIGM
the results of interaction between people and their environment
NATURAL HAZARDS
created by the constant motion of the three processes in the lithosphere:
- Tectonic
- Hydrological
- Meteorological / Climatological
TECTONIC HAZARDS
at plate boundaries, tectonic plates diverge, converge, or transform; this can cause earthquakes at subduction zones or volcanoes on sea floors
HYDROLOGICAL HAZARDS
during glaciation more water is in glacial form than bodies of water; excessive melting can cause flash floods
ANTHROPOCENE
the proposed current geological time period where humans are the dominant influence on climate and environment
HYDROLOGIC CYCLE
where water from oceans, lakes, soil, and rivers evaporates, condenses, and then precipitates on land masses
SALTWATER INTRUSION
caused by either increasing sea levels or a reduction in inland freshwater levels; can lead to groundwater quality degradation
