Humanity and Salvation Flashcards
Describe your understanding of the origin of the human race.
The first man and woman were created by the direct, personal act of God, apart from any evolutionary process (Gen. 1:27, 2:7)
God forms Adam body from existing material and breathing into him the breath of life
How does God’s original design impact sexuality and marriage?
God created man and woman equal in value but distinct in role to come together to complete his purposes (Gen. 1:26, 2:18, 21-25)
Marriage is only legitimate between one man and one woman in a covenantal union (Matthew 19:4-5)
Believers should be married to believers (2 cor. 6:14)
Reflects relationships between Christ and church (Eph. 5:22-32)
Sex is reserved for marriage (1 Thess. 4:3-5)
What does it mean that man was created in God’s image? What does this mean in relation to creation - after the fall - and new birth?
Gen. 1:27, James 3:9 - gives us inherent value in creation, spiritual capacity for relationship with God, and tied to our role in ruling the earth
Creation - ability to reflect God’s image perfectly in fellowship with him
Fall - Spiritual and physical death because we are separated from God (Gen. 3). the image is marred in that we can’t reflect God well, but it is not lost (Gen. 9:6)
New Birth - Fellowship with God has been restored and we are able to reflect God increasingly as we grow into Christlikeness (Rom 8:29). One day we will be brought into perfect fellowship again and able to reflect him perfectly (1 John 3:2)
Were men and women created equal?
Yes, both we made in image on God (Gen. 1:28) and both are equal in Christ (Gal. 3:28)
- They are equal in value but different in role. Woman are man’s helper (Gen. 2:18), but this same world was also used to describe God (Exod. 18:4). This differing roles are seen in marriage. Although they must submit to one another (Eph. 5:21), husbands are the head and are to serve and woman are to help support and are to submit (Eph. 5:22-32)
How did mankind fall and what were the consequences?
Gen. 3 - they were deceived by the snake and chose to define right and wrong for themselves instead of trust God.
Gen. 3:22-24 - they were separated from God physically (leading to physical death) and spiritually (leading to spiritual death) (Eph 2:1-3)
humanity and creation are now under a curse (Gen. 3:15-19)
Discuss total depravity. Include the issue of total depravity and the need for salvation.
Sin has totally corrupted human nature in that it extends to every part of the unsaved person. (Rom. 3:10-18, Eph. 2:-13).
We are unable to respond to God without him first moving (John 6:44)
The need for salvation: you must be born again HUDDLE
Hard hearts - Jere. 17:9
Under God’s wrath - Eph 2:3
Danger of hell - Rom. 6:23
Dead spiritually - Eph. 2:1-3
Lost in sin - Luke 19:10
Enslaved to sin - Rom 3:9
What is sin? When do we become sinners (inherited and imputed sin)? Explain the imputation of Christ’s righteousness.
- Rom. 3:23 - Mean to miss the mark. Includes the wrong things we do and right things we don’t do
- Psalm 51:5 - sinful from birth
- inherited sin - the fallen human nature we share with Adam (Rom 5:12)
- Imputed Sin - sin that has been legally transmitted to my account (Rom 5:18-19)
- Jesus imputed righteousness then is his legal standing credited to my account (Rom. 5:16)
What role does the Godhead play in salvation of man?
Ephesians 1
- Father orginates, is source and plans (1:3-6)
- Salvation was accomplished through death and resurrection of son (1:7-12)
- Salvation is realized through SPIRIT; convicts unbelievers, transforms us through regeneration and seals us (1:13-14)
Define election
God chose to save some based on his own purposes and desire to show grace to undeserving sinners (Eph. 1:4-6)
Define Regeneration (new birth)
We are made spiritually alive (John 3:3, Titus 3:4-6)
Define Redemption
Jesus paid our ransom and set us free (Eph. 1:7)
Define Adoption
legally placed into God’s family as sons/daughters (Gal. 4:5-7)
Define Justification
we are declared righteous and no longer condemned (Rom 3:24, 8:1)
Define Sanctification
Set apart to God; made holy (1 Thess 4:3)
Define Positional Sanctification (like Justification)
Set apart from the penalty of sin (col. 3:1-4)
