Humane Hierarchy Flashcards
What is the humane hierarchy from 1st choice to 6th choice?
1: health
2: antecedents
3: +R
(The real 4th answer is -P)*
4: manage the behavior, -P, -R, extinction, or colsukt another professional
5: -P or extinction
6: +P
When trying to change an unwanted behavior considering health, (1st humane hierarchy), what should you be looking for?
Consider that health deficiency or environmental reasons caused the unwanted behavior, and changing that could modify that behavior. Always tell the client to go to the vet to seek diagnosis.
For the second step in Humane hierarchy, how does one alter the antecedents?
Managing the environment, or the thing that caused the unwanted behavior, from happening. Thus not allowing the dog to practice and self reinforce unwanted behavior.
If the dog is barking through the window, install blinds.
The first step in actual training, or the third step in the humane hierarchy, discusses using PR to modify the unwanted behavior. What does that mean?
Rewarding the correct behavior, as it is the best way to modify a behavior. Apply differential reinforcement to allow the dog to do something they feel is more reinforcing then doing the unwanted behavior.
Describe the 5 sub-steps of the 4th step in the humane hierarchy.
1: manage the behavior
2: NP
3: NR
4: Extinction
5: consult another professional
1: not allowing the dog into situations where they can do the unwanted behavior.
2: no cookie until they do wanted behavior
3: gentle leaders/ head halter training
4: ask another professional for guidance
What is the last resort when all of the other options have been exhausted? Why do we use this?
Positive punishment.
Because we have an obligation to show them how to use it correctly.
What does the Training and behavior intervention practices policy state as unacceptable aversive training practices?
Choking, lifting the dog by the collar where they are off the ground, using an e collar before exhausting other options, etc.
What is the electric collars position statement?
Can only be used when all other resources have been exhausted.
