What is Human Resources?
All activities/decisions made with the intent of increasing the efficiency of employees
Discuss the role of personnel functions (3)
- Communication channel between management and labor
- build and maintain healthy relationships, increases productivity
- formal steps and procedures put in place to govern relationship
Name and explain all the labour relations acts
LRA: provide framework for collective bargaining btwn trade unions and employers. Enforce fundamental rights and ensure effective resolution of disputes
COIDA : compensate workers if they are injured at work. Protects employer. Medical fees and loss of income compensated
EEA: correct imbalances of the past
BCEA: ensure vulnerable workers are not exploited. Long hours, below minimum wage, child labour etc
SDA: encourages workers to take part in education and training. Gives unemployed more opportunities as they are now trained.

Explain the manpower planning function
Business has to have a plan B, even if they are no vacancies are available
- how many workers needed
- what skills required
- when will workers be needed
Explain the induction function
Orientation of new employees. Allow them to feel at home. Opportunity for them to fit in socially. Learn how business does things
Explain the salary determination function
- based on qualifications
- based on current salary
- based on skills and value worker could add to business
- blue collar workers=weekly, white collar=monthly
Explain the selection and appointment function
Many Cvs and interviews take place- screening applicants
Workers who’s skills do not match the requirements are excluded.
Selection of the employee who’s skills best fit the requirements of the vacancy
Good selection =lower turnover of staff
Explain the training function
Narrow gap between actual results and required results
Systematic process of improving employees performance
Evaluation
Ongoing process
ensure employees are operating to the best adv of the business
Assess shortcomings, strengths etc
Discuss the retention function
Avoid high turnover: not good for publicity or productivity
Aimed at encouraging workers to stay in business, especially high skilled.
Explain the recruitment function
Attracts job applicants with necessary skills to replace
Inside: promotions
Outside: employ new employees
Explain the record keeping process
Records of the employees have to kept: SARS and department of labour do investigations to see if workers treated properly and ethical
Salary statements, uif, other details have to be recorded.
Explain the placement function
Employees placed where their skills fit best for the requirements of the vacancy
