What is a database?
Organized body of info that is stored on a computer
How do you collect and sort info?
- Before you do anything use the 5W1H method
- after retrieving info, prioritize important info and exclude the rest using the inverted triangle method.
Discuss the ways in which people interact with visual data
- people interact and comprehend data differently
- left brain: numerical, linear data
- right brain: more creative, picture orientated
- visual learners
- audio learners
- kinesthetic learners
Discuss the ways in which you should present visual data
- present based from the way in which you best interact with the data
- left brain: uses stats, graphs etc
- right brain: perform it, draw pictures
Discuss communication problems
- interpreted incorrectly
- faulty message broadcasted
- sender relays information inadequately
- cultural differences
Discuss the different types of information
Written:
- most permanent and easy to store
- however difficult to interpret emotionally and understand context without human contact
- time consuming
- best for numerical data
Oral:
- easier to convey emotion
Non-verbal:
- relays true intention, feelings through body language, facial expressions etc
Discuss the different directions in which info travels
Vertical: from management down (delegation, assignment of tasks) and from workers up (reporting feedback, asking for advice)
Horizontal: communication of employees on the same lever (co-ordination)
Diagonal: bypasses direct superior. Faster communication m this but direct superiors feel left out. Use for emergency
External: talking to market environment
Discuss the formality of information
Informal: impromptu communication between employees. High risk bc it cannot be controlled.
Formal: planned and official for purposes of storage and clarification
