Name the different types of workers
Core , peripheral, temporary, agency, zero-hour contract, sub-contractors
Explain Core workers
Refer to those employees that typically work full time ( 30/40 hours).
They are highly skilled and essential to the company’s success due to being permanent members
However, there is loss of staffing flexibility and need for business to pay a salary regardless of company performance
Explain Peripheral workers
Refers to employees that work on a part-time basis.
These workers are flexible and contracted by the organisation. However, they are not permanent members so may not be as skilled or trained
Explain Temporary/Agency workers
Refers to workers that cover gaps full-time workers cannot
They are effectively used during busy time periods which is cost-effective for the business. However, they are expensive to train, not experts and agency fees are costly
Explain Zero-hour contract workers
Refers to workers that are not guaranteed to work a set amount of hours each week
This provides employees and the business with flexibility, cost-efficient. However, employees may feel pressured to accept offered hours, does not provide workers with financial stability, lower staff retention rate
Explain Sub-contract workers
An employee that undertakes work for a company as part of a larger project e.g. an external plumber carrying out work for a building company.
Offers flexibility as and when the business needs, short-term specialist expertise. However, these workers typically charge higher prices and act as temporary cover which may mean they are harder to find
