What is the definition of a leader ?
A leader influences the actions and behaviours of others. They act as a role model, motivating their team to meet long term business goals.
What is the definition of a manager ?
A manager plans, coordinates and organises a team. They use lots of authority and delegation to ensure short term business goals are met
What is strategic leadership ?
When the leadership style is based upon the overall business strategy, where a leader takes direct control in order to meet long term goals. The leader has no association with day-to-day operations but sets core beliefs and vision
What is MBO ?
MBO is where objectives are made in relation to a businesses organisational goals, set out clearly by the leader/manager.
Advantages of MBO ?
Ensures detailed planning and that all responsibilities of the workforce are clear which results in little conflict and a strong reward system
Disadvantages of MBO ?
De-motivating if objectives not achieved and may be complex if used in a large organisation where there is several functions. Domino effect if objectives are not met
What is Situational leadership ?
Where the type of leadership is adapted to the situation, this can change constantly.
This is backed by the Hersey and Blanchard theory 1970, where leadership is determined by the leaders personality and behavior
What is Functional/action-centered leadership ?
Where leadership is dependent on the workforce different functions within the business. e.g. Sales manager, HR manager. This is backed by the John Adair theory 1979 where a task, individual, team and model is used to ensure business goals are being met
What is the Tannenbaum and Schmidt theory 1958,1973 ?
There is an imaginary line along various styles of management and leadership to explain how behaviors influence decisions
What is the Douglas McGregor theory 1960 ?
Theory X - strict supervision, external rewards and penalties
Theory Y - Little to no supervision, improved employee satisfaction
