Human Physiology Kidney Flashcards
Define Excretion
Removal of waste products of metabolism from the body
Two functions of Excretory System Performs
1) Removes nitrogenous wastes that may be toxic to the body in large concentrations
2) Removes excess water to maintain a suitable osmolarity within the tissues and cells
Defecation and excretion
Not considered as that’s undigested food products and not metabolic waste products
Aquatic Animals remove nitrogenous waste via
Ammonia
Mammals and excretory waste
Urea
Reptiles and Birds and excretory products
Uris Acid
Animals are either ? Depending on how they maintain their internal osmotic conditions
Osmoconformers or osmoregulators
Osmoconformers
Mainatten Internal conditions that are equal to the osmolarity of their Environment.
Require less energy as they minimise the water movement in and out of the cell
Ex : Jellyfish
Osmoregulators
Keep their bodys osmolarity constant regardless of Environmental conditions .
Energy intensive process, as it has to ensure that the osmotic conditions are always tightly controlled
Ex : Mammals
Specialised excretory system for osmoregulation and removal of nitrogenous system
Insects - malpighian tubules (connected to the digestive system of the animal)
Mammals - Kidney (Connects to the digestive system of the animal)
Malphigian Tubules
