Human Performance Parameters Flashcards
Performance parameters
cardiorespiratory fitness, neuromuscular function, cognitive function, muscular strength, power, endurance, flexability and speed
What is cardiorespiratory fitness
The ability of the body to process oxygen, transport it effectively in order to maintain exercise intensity
How to measure cardiorespiratory fitness
Gold standard measurement : Maximal oxygen uptake VO2 Max
what is the VO2 Max
max amount of oxygen utilised in the body per kg of body weight, per minute
What is a direct measurement of CR fitness
gas analysis
HR monitoring
using treadmill tests or a cycle ergometer
indirect CR measurement of VO2 Max
can estimate it from the maximal exercise duration
heart rate calculations during submaximal or maximal exercise.
Treadmill speed plus predictive equations.
Beep tests
Field testing VO2 max
involves a kind of test and then a series of predictive equations to calculate vo2 max
what is muscular strength testing
Muscualr strength = Ability of a muscle or muscle group to
exert a maximal external force and exercises include upper body bench press. Muscualr endurance is Ability of muscle or muscle group to
repeatedly exert a submaximal resistance and is completed by reps or push to failure.
Hand grip strength
usuallay shown to be a predictive outcome measure in older adults, and used on post op evaluation
flexabilty test
sit and reach test
evaluation of hamstring and lower back flexability
functional tests for predicting outcomes
Gait Speed, Timed up and go, berg balance scale, short physical performance battery score, mini mental state examination
Gait speed
important in geriatiric clinical settings. It measures the walking speed of an individual over a short distance.
It provides information on a patients mobility, balance and overall health
Timed up and go tests
asseses lower limb mobility
patients sits in standrad chair, it is an assessment to see how long it takes the patient to get up, go to assigned distance and return. It measures fall risk due to mobility. if over 12 seconds they have increased risk and increased risk depending on time taken
Berg balance scale
measures balance in elderly, tasks are graded from 0-4
