Q

What are Skill based behaviours?

A

Routine activities conducted automatically and do not require conscious allocation of attentional resources - Determined by stored, preprogrammed patterns of instructions.
Unable to verbalise

6
Q

What are Knowledge based behaviours?

A

Those in which stored rules no longer apply and a novel situation is presented for which a plan must be developed to solve a problem.
In contrast to set rules, plans are often required to be changed based on the situation.
Attention must be allocated to the behaviour and, therefore, performance is goal-controlled.

7
Q

What are Rule based behaviours?

A

Activities controlled by a set of stored rules or procedures
Typically based on specific ability and the rules for performance can be verbalised. The distinction
between rule and skill based is the attention and level of training of each individual.

Q

What is Stress?

A

Your body’s way of responding to any kind of demand (caused by both good and bad
experiences).
When people feel stressed their bodies release chemicals - these chemicals give people
more energy and strength, which can be a good or a bad thing depending on the situation.

Q

What are the various types of Stress?

A

Survival Stress (Fight or Flight)
Internal Stress (Worry)
Environmental Stress (Response to world around you)
Fatigue & Overwork (Minimised through adequate breaks)

Q

What personal Factors induce Stress in ATC?

A

Continuous high task demands
Numerous ill-equipped a/c with inexperienced pilots; Traffic and equipment mis-matches
Misuse of sophisticated equipment;
Inexperienced or unpredictable colleagues
Divisions and allocation of work
Vague or ambiguous ATC procedures

Q

What outside factors can induced stress?

A

Insufficient support
Unsupportive management
Conditions of employment
Working hours - Can lead to Night shift Fatigue – ‘4 am syndrome’
Talent insufficient for task
Reduced ability to cope with stress
Reduced ability to cope with shift work
Financial and domestic worries;
Bereavement
illness
drugs
alcohol
Personal disappointment or disillusionment.

Q

What is Boredom?

A

It’s a subjective state of being weary & restless through lack of interest and a feeling
that the day or period is dull or tediou

14
Q

What induces Boredom?

A

Monotony (not confined to simple or repetitive tasks) – more likely to arise
with good performance;
Increased by some of the following:
Passivity alertness;
Requirement to maintain;
Fewer opportunities to demonstrate skills;
Less need for human intervention;
Reduced challenge of job;
Reduction of esteem in which job held.

15
Q

How can we alleviate Boredom?

A

Allow controllers as much freedom as possible to control and schedule their own workload
Try to keep staff levels adjusted so that there is always sufficient skilled
work to do
Design workspaces, equipment and tasks so that they promote a hierarchy of skills, and
provide opportunities to use those skills
Allow controllers to select the appropriate level of automated assistance
Try to ensure that individuals are not alone at work - for the prevalence and consequences of
boredom are often less serious among groups than individuals.

16
Q

What is Overconfidence?

A

A feeling of invincibility and may tempt the controller to take chances which would not normally be considered.

17
Q

What is Complacency?

A

complacency whereby the controller feels
that they can overcome ANY obstacle in their path and the job is too easy. This can lead to the controller
taking chances or missing safety related issues.

18
Q

What is Fatigue?

A

A condition reflecting inadequate rest.
We have come to consider fatigue as a markedly reduced ability to carry out a task.
It is a condition of reduced performance from which there is no certainty that a person can be aroused (motivated) in an emergency
even when considerable stimulus is present.

19
Q

Types of fatigue

A

can be acute, chronic or mental.

20
Q

What are the causes of Fatigue?

A

Disturbed rhythms
demanding tasks
cumulative effects
stress.

21
Q

List the features which are attributed to fatigue?

A

More easily satisfied with lower levels of
performance
Errors remain uncorrected
Reduced flexibility of approach
Increased likelihood of errors in
decision making
Mood changes detrimental to teamwork
Tunnelling of attention
Decreased ability to concentrate

22
Q

How do you cope with Fatigue?

A

Avoid stimulants prior to sleeping
Avoid alcohol as strategy to hasten sleep
Avoid a heavy meal shortly before bedtime
Consider learning relaxation exercises
Physical exercise
can also be relaxing e.g. a walk or a swim

23
Q

How can Fatigue be overcome?

A

Sleep
increasing physical fitness (related to mental performance and
health)

24
Q

What is Acute fatigue?

A

It is induced by long duty periods or by a string of particularly demanding tasks performed in a short term.

25
Q

What is Chronic fatigue?

A

It is induced by the cumulative effects of fatigue over the longer term.

26
Q

What is Mental fatigue?

A

It may result from emotional stress, even with normal physical rest. Like the
disturbance of body rhythms, fatigue may lead to potentially unsafe situations, a deterioration in
efficiency and well-being. Hypoxia and noise are contributing factors.

27
Q

What are the benefits of sleep?

A

Optimal performance is impossible without adequate sleep.

28
Q

What are the 3 essential elements of risk management?

A

Assessment, Evaluation & Treatment
