Define Ergonomics?
Study of man in relation to his working environment;
What are the 3 ways that an environment may be categorised?
Physically (e.g. vibration, noise, zero-
gravity)
Cognitively (e.g. time pressure, uncertainty, risk)
Organisationally (e.g. organisational structure, job design).
How do we describe the ATCO working environment?
This provides a convenient way for organising
some of the major concerns of human engineering:
-The selection and design of machine displays and controls
-The layout and design of workplaces design for maintainability
-The design of the work environment.
What factors should be considered in ATC Building design?
Towers versus approach/centre/oceanic =
5 factors: View; Scan; Movement; Situation; Lighting
What factors should be considered specifically in ATC Towers?
Physical handovers of strips
Blinds not obscure views of other ATCO
Supervisor position
Divisions of responsibility
What is unique about the ATC Workspace?
Much displayed information
Many input devices
Split or amalgamation of duties;
Space for HOW/TOW
Space for supervisors etc
Maintenance requirements.
